Sweet Honesty.

The concept of being honest with oneself encompasses a broad spectrum of meanings. It involves delving deep into one's innermost thoughts and emotions to understand what honesty entails properly. This introspection enables individuals to be genuine with themselves and deliberate in their actions towards themselves and others. It's about embracing psychological honesty, which grants individuals a deeper self-awareness, fostering personal growth and development that adds greater significance to their evolving identity.

In my counseling training, we delved into the significance of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which posits that individuals must have their basic needs like food, shelter, and safety met before they can focus on higher-level needs such as self-actualization. It's important to understand that many people are unable to reach self-actualization because they are preoccupied with fulfilling their more immediate needs.

However, self- actualization involves profoundly understanding oneself, including beliefs, values, experiences, personality, growth, and needs. It's about uncovering the purpose behind our actions and understanding the greater meaning in our lives, which in turn helps us recognize and harness our strengths. Some individuals prefer to turn a blind eye to the challenges that are impeding their progress.

What would you say if I asked you about the significance of being truly honest with yourself? The concept of honesty holds various interpretations for different individuals, but what aspects do you believe require deep reflection when applied to your own life? This reflection is essential for establishing the level of self-trust needed to progress, take risks, and evolve into a better version of yourself.

During difficult times, many people experience a sense of being trapped, which can make it harder to move forward. This feeling of being stuck can persist for a long time without us realizing the areas of our lives that may be holding us back. I often hear people express a desire to be open and honest about their relationships with future partners, their evolving roles within their families, the friends and acquaintances who should or shouldn't be part of their lives, and the impact of past traumas on their ability to make positive changes. If you are not honest with yourself and how your emotions and feelings impact your ability to make progress, you will always regret making. The hesitations and doubts that may arise from your failure to be honest with yourself can give rise to various potential outcomes.

At times, being completely honest can manifest as a physical sensation within you, a gut feeling that signals that something is amiss and requires attention. This sensation may indicate that your decision wasn't grounded in rational thinking but somewhat influenced by external pressures such as the fear of judgment from others. The rapid beating of your heart might signal the realization that your choice had far more significant consequences than initially anticipated, highlighting a lack of mindfulness in your actions and behaviors.

Mastering self-honesty is an incredibly rewarding practice that involves regularly reflecting on our reactions and actions. As my grandmother got older, she used to wear a fragrance called Sweet Honesty, which became intertwined with her presence and filled the room with a profound sense of calm. I could always anticipate her arrival in a room as my senses immediately associated her with that comforting aroma. Now, I wear the scent to carry a piece of my grandmother with me wherever I go. It serves as a reminder of the values she upheld, especially honesty, and her commitment to doing what was right by others, God, and herself. The fragrance embodied everything she stood for, and it inspires me to uphold those same values in my life.

As you progress on your journey, it's essential to be truly honest with yourself. Although it may be challenging at first to confront and work through the pain from your past, the process will lead to improvement as you discover moments of joy and acknowledge the significance of honesty in every aspect of your journey.
